Thank you, music.
Today is December, 1st. Despite this being my birthday week, it’s also the start of what I consider proper winter. Brrrrrr.
I’m currently in Berlin and damn do I feel it’s winter.
I wake-up most days feeling low energy. Being human, I suffer from seasonal depression or SAD (seasonal affective disorder). After all, this is my first winter since 2014 and it is happening in Berlin.
Anyway, I am not writing this post to whine over my winter blues. If you know something about me you know I have a discipline of accepting things as they are, and if winter blues is the current scene in the movie called “Oumnia’s life”, then I’ll have exactly that.
No, I’m writing this because I wanted to pay tribute to music. I was working and feeling low. So I went out for coffee. Coffee is a mood enhancer. But then, I played this song.
And I suddenly felt good. Like, instantly. Here I was singing along and feeling cheerful again!
I’m not going to go into the details and science of how music affects our mood. There’s plenty of that online. But the bottom line is this: there’s this amazing thing called “music”, it’s accessible and almost free, and you can use it to play with your mood. Isn’t that powerful? I think so.
I went to a little performance last Sunday, and I was amazed by the power of the sounds that were played. Some sets took me to a dark place, some to a light one, some to both. And from that, I drove insights, about myself and about life. I find that powerful.
Music is a tool for experiencing emotions and my body through dance. For me, it’s as useful and interesting as my meditation and yoga practices.
So, here’s to music. Thank you for existing. 🙏
And here’s my invitation to you: next time you feel like you need a little pick-me-up, pick a song you like, turn up the volume and throw a little dance party in your living room. It works every time for me!
